Bio: Currently Mike Black, MBA, DLMCM, MT (ASCP) holds the position of Laboratory Assistant Vice President of Avera McKennan Hospital and University Health Center (flagship), as well as the Laboratory Service Line Administrator of Clinical Laboratories spanning 5 states and 6 medical regions, over 300 locations and 350+ employees, including both Clinical Laboratory and Anatomic Pathology services. Mike has more than 25 years’ experience in the laboratory environment. His leadership experience encompasses automation, community hospitals, as well as several laboratory outreach and inpatient lab settings.
Since coming to Avera Health in 2012, Mike has helped Avera’s Laboratory maintain the first CAP ISO 15189 certification in the country, as well as the longest running and implemented Avera’s Laboratory Service Line.
Before coming to Avera, Mike worked as the Laboratory Director at Baptist Saint Anthony’s Health System in Amarillo, TX, as well as the chair of the ethics committee. Prior to that, he spent 5 years at Baylor Scott and White Health Care System in Dallas, TX as the Director of the Laboratory/Cardiopulmonary and then moved to the corporate offices at Baylor as the STEEEP & Fiscal Manager. Mike was part of the original team that led the start-up of the program currently known as the STEEEP Global Institute at Baylor.
Mike holds both an MBA and a Bachelor of Science Degree from Wayland Baptist University in Lubbock, TX.
Mike Black continues his leadership development by his Board Membership with the Sioux Falls Community Blood Bank, Consulting, volunteering and speaking engagements at industry conferences.
