In 1992, Jack Shaw, along with three other major southeastern Michigan healthcare system administrators hatched the idea of forming a network of hospital outpatient laboratories to become a competitive presence in the commercial laboratory industry.
This new partnership, outrageous and innovative in 1992, became known as Joint Venture Hospital Laboratories (JVHL). During his 20 years as JVHL’s Executive Director, JVHL became the premier outreach lab services program in Michigan; nationally admired for its record of success in this increasingly complex health industry segment.
Jack Shaw passed away on November 30, 2017. His spirit and his enthusiasm about JVHL and the laboratory industry remained undiminished throughout his courageous battle with cancer.
The mission of this scholarship is to honor Jack’s memory, his contributions to the lab industry and extend his legacy of learning and sharing knowledge. Jack attended nearly every Executive War College, and was a featured speaker several times. Executive War College is the preeminent gathering of laboratory industry executives and emerging lab leaders. Through this scholarship award, Jack will rightfully continue to be a presence.
The Jack Shaw Memorial Scholarship will be awarded annually to an early laboratory leadership careerist to provide them with the opportunity to be a first-time attendee of the Executive War College in order to provide them with exposure to the latest knowledge, thinking, business and legislative developments, and clinical and strategic innovations shared by the world’s leading experts shaping the laboratory industry of today and tomorrow.
